Strategies on Improving Political Parties Compliance With Extant Laws On Inclusivity
As part of its activities aimed at empowering the political parties in Nigeria, the NIPSS-PPLPDC organised a two (2) day training for the National Legal Officers of all political parties in Nigeria. The training which took place July 3 and 4, 2018, at Barcelona Hotels, Abuja engaged participants on how to strengthening their capacity and identify gaps in the operations and management of political parties in Nigeria. It dwelled specifically on refocusing their parties to imbibe and comply with all extant laws geared towards the inclusion of all stakeholders in their activities. This is seen as the only panacea to building acceptable and enduring political party culture in the country. As usual, the workshop was handled by a group of versatile resource persons drawn from the rich pool available to the Centre. A total of five (5) topics were presented for interaction, along with practical sessions. The topics were broadly divided into; I. Understanding the extant laws on inclusivity in Nigeria II. Inclusivity of political parties’ constitutions, structures, rules, procedures and guidelines in Nigeria III. Issues and challenges of compliance by Nigeria’s political parties with extant laws on inclusivity IV. Designing internal policies on inclusivity by political parties in Nigeria V. Strategies to improve compliance with extant laws on inclusivity At the opening session, participants and invited dignitaries were welcomed by the Ag. Director General of NIPSS, Jonathan M. Juma, mni. He enjoined them to give the training the rapt attention it deserved. The DG also thanked the EU SDGN for providing the funds that facilitated the training and promised that the National Institute will not rest on its oars in seeing to a virile political party system in Nigeria. To see to a successful completion of the trining were officals of both the NIPSS PPLPDC and that of the Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC. Among them are; Prof. Habu Galadima, Director of Research and Chief Opera ting Officer of the Centre and Hon. Muhammed L. Nalado, National Chairman, IPAC. It was indeed an educative programme, full of lively discussions and exchange of ideas, as participants at the end of the workshop relish pleasant experiences, as well as expanded perspectives on several issues.
