The Political Parties Leadership and Policy Development Center of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS-PPLDC), Kuru, started a series of activities by organizing a 2-day training and capacity building workshop for official of political of political parties on their rights and procedure to complain about content and conduct of political Broadcast in collaboration with the European Union.
The training which took place on the 5th and 6th of July, 2018 at the Barcelona Hotel, Abuja was aimed at building the capacity of all National Publicity Secretaries of political parties on their rights and procedures to complain about the content and conduct of political Broadcasts.
As usual, the workshop was handled by erudite scholars and seasoned media experts in Nigeria, including; Professors Ralph Akinfeleye of the University of Lagos; Umaru Pate of Bayero University; Lai Oso of Lagos state University; Chinyere Okunna of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (the first female Professor of Communication in Nigeria); Tonnie Iredia (who was also a former Director General of the largest television network in Africa, the Nigerian Television Authority); and Baba Barau, the Director of News for NTA.
Using participatory approach, a total of 6 topics were discussed and debated along with practical sessions. The topics were broadly divided into:
Political parties and the rights to decent and fair coverage in political broadcast content
Regulatory frameworks for seeking redress by political parties on broadcast media coverage of political activities in Nigeria.
Political parties and the development of useable contents for political broadcast.
Effective procedures for political parties to lodge complaints against negative contents in political broadcasts.
Political parties and the conduct of effective party broadcast media relatives.
Methods of complaining about political parties' compliance with extant laws on political broadcast.
The training was indeed an educative programme, full of lively discussions, and exchange of ideas. At the end of the workshop, participants relish at the pleasant experiences they had, as well as the wealth of knowledge and perspectives gained on several issues.
